Connecting Landscapes

The Connecting Landscapes project is an ongoing initiative led by the Woolshed Thurgoona Landcare Group, working alongside private landholders and supported by AlburyCity to restore and reconnect remnant native vegetation across Thurgoona, Wirlinga, Table Top and surrounds.

Project Overview

The Connecting Landscapes project is an ongoing initiative led by the Woolshed Thurgoona Landcare Group, working alongside private landholders and supported by AlburyCity to restore and reconnect remnant native vegetation across Thurgoona, Wirlinga, Table Top and surrounds.

Since 2017, the project has focused on rebuilding habitat corridors within the critically endangered Grassy Box Gum Woodland, allowing native wildlife to move safely across the landscape. This unique landscape supports 118 native bird species, including six listed as threatened, as well as the vulnerable Squirrel Glider and the endangered Sloane’s Froglet.

Why it Matters

Grassy Box Gum Woodland has been extensively cleared for agriculture and high-quality remnants are now extremely rare. As Thurgoona and Wirlinga continue to grow as Albury’s development corridor, this vegetation community is increasingly fragmented and degraded. The Connecting Landscapes project addresses this loss through revegetation and restoration.

The project strengthens woodland structure by restoring a diverse understory of small trees, shrubs, native grasses and groundcovers. A healthy understory provides food, shelter and nesting sites, protects smaller species from predators, and increases the overall ecological resilience of the landscape.

What We Do

Connecting Landscapes works primarily with private landholders who are neighbouring public remnant vegetation, particularly along creek lines and wetlands, to create wildlife linkages that allow animals to safely move across the landscape. Activities include:

  • Establishing stock-exclusion fencing
  • Revegetation through tube stock planting
  • Wetland protection and restoration
  • Landholder education

Outcomes

Connecting Landscapes brings volunteers, neighbours and community partners together to restore nature as a shared experience. Participation fosters connection to the land, strengthens social bonds and builds pride in our local environment.
